Forgetting what is behind, and straining forward to what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

"Does your wife know you're here?"*
*Please note the correct usage of "your" and "you're."

No. I don't see the harm in it. Yes, I usually spout off about not enjoying the day, but plenty of people do. So why not have a chance to get dressed up, have a nice meal, give your loved one something special?
I understand the arguments about it being crass commercialism and that we should demonstrate our love 365 days a year, but you could say the same thing about Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween - any of the major holidays. Valentine's Day is about what you bring to it, just like any other holiday. It doesn't have to be crassly commercialistic (yay, I invented a word!). I say, kiss your loved ones, tell them you love them, and do it again tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow.*
*This opinion brought to you by a terminally single middle-aged woman who plans to spend Valentine's Day evening at home with her cats and TV.

I'm making this a public entry because I want the entire world to know what an absolute sweetheart

Not until people stop talking about it and just do it.
The Color of Water by James McBride. It's a biography of his mother - a Jewish woman who left her home in Virginia to marry a black man and rear 8 mixed-race children in Harlem in the 1930s. When her first husband died, she married a friend of his and bore 4 more children.
It's an amazing story. This woman's courage and heart, to live where and how she did at the time, are inspiring. All 12 of her children went to college, and many went further than that. I can't praise this book highly enough - it's well-written, full of love and honesty, and you need to read it.

"Reality" shows - The Bachelor, Survivor, etc. They are the worst aspects of every sociological experiment ever all rolled into one. They value infighting, backbiting, manipulation, lying, hypocrisy, and all those other negative traits that most normal people try to avoid.
I guess the fascination is voyeurism. I don't know. I don't get any of it at all.

When you remember ones who have lied
Who said that they cared but then left as you cried
Beautiful darling
Don't think of me
Because all I ever wanted is in your eyes

But "my" song, the one that I identify with most closely, is this one:
No, I don't know where I'm going
But I sure know where I've been
Hanging on the promises
In songs of yesterday
And I've made up my mind
I ain't wasting no more time
But here I go again
Here I go again
Though I keep searching for an answer
I never seem to find what I'm looking for
Oh Lord, I pray You give me strength to carry on
'Cause I know what it means
To walk along the lonely street of dreams
And here I go again on my own
Going down the only road I've ever known
Like a drifter I was born to walk alone
And I've made up my mind
I ain't wasting no more time
I'm just another heart in need of rescue
Waiting on love's sweet charity
And I'm gonna hold on for the rest of my days
'Cause I know what it means
To walk along the lonely street of dreams
And here I go again on my own
Going down the only road I've ever known
Like a drifter I was born to walk alone
And I've made up my mind
I ain't wasting no more time
But here I go again
-- Whitesnake, "Here I Go Again"
